The
Early Intervention Scheme was set up as a new project
in early 2006 following the initiation of a partnership formed
between Oxfordshire Association for
the Blind (OAB) and Oxfordshire
Social and Community Services (S&CS), formerly
called Social Services. S&CSs identify a number of clients
thought to be in need of an early visit and pass these to
Marian Small of OAB. They are then contacted and visited as
soon as possible.
A
‘home safety check’
is carried out, which includes:
Aspects
of getting about, both in and outdoors.
The
general layout of the home, including changes in levels such
as steps and stairs.
Safety
at entrances and exits.
Trip
hazards and lighting.
Independent
living skills such as cooking and taking medication.
S&CS
are then notified and they subsequently arrange for a member
of their Visual Impairment Team to visit the person. A S&CS
Rehabilitation Officer will carry out a detailed assessment
and, where necessary, will issue equipment to help the visually
impaired person, offer advice and link up with other agencies.
The
Early Intervention Scheme runs throughout Oxfordshire and
is intended to help people with visual impairment remain safe
and independent in their own homes. Whilst S&CS receive
most of their referrals from the medical staff at the Oxford
Eye Hospital, clients can be referred by their GP, family,
friends or they can refer themselves.
