Assistive
Technology is a means of storing,
processing and presenting information electronically through
a number of media. Information and Communication Technologies
such as computers provide a variety of tools to provide access
to information to learn new skills and concepts in the process.
At
OAB, Assistive Technology is approached in a practical client-
centred manner. Through the use of assistive technology, our
clients expand their knowledge and understanding of this technology
is being actively involved in the everyday lives of blind
and the visually impaired. By offering clients new tools to
access information, it provides opportunities for a more productive
and independent life.
Personal
Computers or PCs are becoming ever more popular as prices
reduce and the processing power increases. Sight loss and
restricted vision need not be a barrier to using a PC, indeed
with the correct software and equipment IT can be a “window
to the world”, through instant messaging, e-mail and
the Internet. We have several computers at our Sight Advisory
Centre in Oxford on which we can demonstrate some of the ways
in which PCs can be made easier to use for people with sight
loss.
Our
I.T. area has a wide variety of equipment all designed to
help sight impaired people perform everyday tasks more easily.
These include:
•
Electronic reading aids
• Text to speech software and hardware
• CCTV’s
• Electronic magnifiers
• MP3 player
• Electronic pocket viewers – mono and colour

• Mouse scanners
• Assistive technology software such as Zoom Text and
Jaws.
• Keyboard Pads
• Screen Readers
• Information on computer and Internet issues and accessibility
• ... and many other items, too many to list.
Open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00pm.
The best way to find out about the equipment and techniques
we have on offer at our Sight Advisory Centre is to come and
see us. We may be able to help in ways that you never imagined
possible.
