The Twinned Towns Tour The Twinned Towns Tour

Two Bike Rides, from Banbury & Oxford, to two towns in Europe!

Gary - Colin - DianeOn the morning of Saturday September 12th, local fundraiser, Colin Cure, and his friends, Gary and Diane, will begin a 200 mile bike ride to Leiden, in Holland. The ride will start from Oxford, and he will be waved off by the Lord Mayor, Mary Clarkson; as well as by various friends and supporters.

The ride is to promote the services of the local county-charity, Oxfordshire Association for the Blind (OAB) which exists to support every one of the 10,000 or so visually impaired people who live in the county. As the charity’s main base can be found in Oxford, Colin thought it would be an interesting challenge to cycle to one of the city’s five twin towns: Leiden.

Colin Cure on his bikeFor the last three years, Colin has been the Director for OAB, having worked for various other groups and charities for disabled people across the UK in recent years. In the time since his appointment, OAB have opened up a variety of new help services, including a resource and volunteer outpost in Banbury and a modest audio library, which local visually impaired people can now access.

Earlier this year, one of Colin’s comrades at OAB, Ben Allcock, who works as the charity’s Communications Officer and Fundraiser, successfully completed his own twin town tour when he cycled from Banbury to Ermont: a suburb of Paris. He was touched by the positive response to the ride, and how many people liked the idea of linking the two towns.

Colin hopes that his efforts, in partnership with Ben’s, can help to promote the services that OAB offer for blind and partially sighted people in Oxford, and around the whole of the county in general. He also hopes that the challenges will help to raise debate about the many issues facing local visually impaired people when it comes to transport, as well as raising vital funding for the charity he leads, and believes in.

Previous fundraising challenges for Colin have included a three-day bike ride around Oxfordshire, which he completed for OAB last year, as well as countless other cycling marathons, like Lands End to John O’Groats.
